DESCRIPTION

1) FREE SPACE - 5:15
Gerardo Maza - Keyboards

Tribal rhythm's weave in and out, distant and close, the primal groans of deep space.

2) DEEP WATERS
- 10:02
Gerardo Maza - keyboards, guitar synth, Hart Electronic drums, kalimba, sound effects
Mark Weinstein - flute

This piece is in 7/4. A dreamy mixture of accoustic and electric visions and improvisations. With a sense of travel and movement and emphasis on different aspects of the listening experience.

3) ORGANIC
- 04:14
Gerardo Maza - fahringer, kalimba, bendir, caxixi, udu, accoustic guitar, sound effects.
Mark Weinstein - flute

Another piece in 7/4 but the gravitational pull is bringing us back to earth for a night in nature, looking at the stars.

4) WHIRLPOOL
- 06:22
Gerardo Maza -nose flute, tar, caxixi, kalimba, keyboards, sound effects.

Yet more craftwork in 7/4. The shaman's dance, the primal vortex and a sense of sadness in the midst of all the madness.

5) HOUSE OF LIGHT
- 04:21
Gerardo Maza - keyboards, nal, sound effects,
Greg Pai - wood blocks

Sounds in a state of morphing, riding on horseback. I look to the ceiling of this house, there is spiritual light in the architecture.

6) DREAM FORMATION
- 08:06
Gerardo Maza - keyboards, percussion, sound effects.
Greg Pai - drum set, wood blocks, percussion.

If the last piece was the architecture of light here we move beyond any kind of structure to the atmosphere that surrounds us. The wind, the forest, the trees, the rocks and plants, the outer spaces.

7) TRANCE FORMATION
- 07:51
Gerardo Maza - keyboards, nal, sound effects.
Greg Pai - drum set.

This piece is a continuation of the previous improvisation. Things really took off here with a sense of forward momentum. Continuing to transform and fall forward and yet with a distant, far away feeling throughout, meditative. The kettle is boiling.

8) ROLLING THUNDER, LIGHTNING STRIKE
- 07:21
Gerardo Maza - Korean drum, nal. bendir, shakers.
Greg Pai - drum set.

This piece is a seven minute drum percussion solo exploration. At once gentle and explosive. Greg's teacher and mentor was Milford Graves and mine was Nana Vasconcelos. Enjoy.

9) YEMA YANA
- 05:56
Gerardo Maza - keyboards, percussion, sound effects.
Mark Weinstein - multi-flutes.

This piece features flutist Mark Weinstein. Yema short for Yemaya of the ocean and Yana, sanskrit for vehicle. Soulful flute solo's and hipnotic rhythms on a beach in outer space.

10) TRUE SPACE
- 06:53
Gerardo Maza - keyboards, caxixi, percussion.

Somehow this piece is related to House of Light though I am not sure how.
truly a collage of different textures, rhythms and tones. Expanding into space like the element of fire. Wood, fire, ash, smoke, air.

THE STORY

In 2004 I was listening to the University radio station KTUH and
I called in and won two tickets to the "Hawaiian Jazz Blow Out"
a two day festival at KCC by Diamond Head Crater. So I go to see
some shows and there is this flute player performing with his band and
I recognize him as the cat I use to play with back in the early 80's in
New York. I had not seen or been in touch with
Mark Weinstein for over twenty years. He was flown out to Hawaii
for this show. He is in town for only a few days, so we hang out together
and I bring him to the studio to lay some tracks before he left back to New York.

I had begun working on "Tribal Warriors Travel Through Space"
earlier that year so I had some tracks already recorded for our session.
Then There was about seven or eight months in 2005 when I had stopped
working on the project not really knowing what direction to take with it.
Then in the begining part of 2006 it came to me and the fire was rekindled.
Several pieces where put aside and several new pieces where included.
During this time I reconnected with drummer, percussionist Greg Pai and
we began to do some improvised sessions together. Eventually out of
these sessions several pieces got included and "tribal Warriors"
was on its way to completion.

Mixing and mastering this CD has been a meditation on sound
that was a very rewarding experience for me as I was afforded
the time to explore the many possibilities the music brought
in a very creative and expansive way.

May you enjoy This music.
My latest offering.
G.Maza
