NOTES ON LISTENING

Music is one-half of the equation, the listener is the other half.
What is true listening? It is a meditation: choosing to be conscious, to
remain open to the outer and the inner senses. When you listen to music in
this way, a vast universe reveals itself. Even a piece you have heard
hundreds of times reveals something new.

Together, the musician and the listener, we stand in front of an infinite
number of doorways. Each time we set aside distractions and truly listen,
another door opens and we see beyond, into the unknown.
There is a saying that true music has one or both of these qualities: great
sadness and great love. Through music we begin to perceive that our lives
and the sound of the universe also consist of this great sadness and great
love.

All sounds are true vibrations, becoming light, and revealing colors, shades
and the depths of time and space. We are here to share and explore these
gifts. In time, may these gifts help us to love more, discover more, and
make peace with ourselves and each other.

Join me in this awakening.
